Highland's Officers Promote Education While Also Protecting

With two police officers patrolling the hallways of Highland and attending sports events, the presence of law enforcement has become a normal part of the school’s environment. It’s typical to see police officers patrolling downtown Salt Lake City or big urban areas, but is Highland so dangerous a place that the school needs police officers in order to maintain a safe environment for students?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), police officers aren’t just necessary in the public school system to prevent violence but they are essential in maintaining control and safety for other students as well.
In 2007, the CDC conducted a nationwide survey among high school students about violence in their school. The survey found that 5.9 percent of students carried a weapon on school property within the past 30 days...
